The artists featured in The dA’s Frequency Hopping: A Women’s Exhibition reflect diversity in mediums, cultures, ages, and abilities. The title Frequency Hopping is a nod to honoring screen star Hedy Lamarr who was one of the contributing inventors of frequency hopping technology now seen in Wi-Fi®, Bluetooth®, and code-division multiple access (CDMA). After reading about Frequency Hopping’s characteristics like multi-tasking radio waves, constant connectivity between transmitter and receiver, as well as the signals ability to enable a code for the purpose of protection; it was very confirming that Frequency Hopping was a very fitting title for a women’s exhibition.

The dA is pleased to present an exhibition that shifts perceptions of art from exclusive to inclusive and prioritizes equitable art experiences for all. The dA sees this as an opportunity to invite accessible conversations about lifting visual arts, music, poetry, dance, theatre, and film that ignite, encourage, and empower all ages to be understanding, empathetic, and inclusive arts advocates for all.

While some strides are being made to lift women’s presence in the art world, data shows that equality for women artists in museums, galleries, and auction houses continues to be challenged and undervalued.

Here are some facts to ponder:

Nearly half (45.8%) of visual artists in the United States are women; on average, they earn 74¢ for every dollar made by male artists. National Endowment for the Arts

Just 24% of the 27,000 artists shown at art fairs in 2018 were women. Art fair sales that year totaled $16.5 billion. The Global Market Report 2019 Basel/USB.

A recent survey of the permanent collections of 18 prominent U.S. art museums found that the represented artists are 87% male and 85% white. "Diversity of artists in major U.S. museums," Public Library of Science
