Life changing obsessions often end in art. This happened for
photographer Jacqueline Darakjy in 1986 when she recovered over
1,000 negatives chronicling the time missionary James C. Ogden
spent in Tibet with his wife in the early 1900’s. Ogden
actually became a mediator for treaties and disputes between
the Chinese and Tibetans.
Darakjy spent 10 years restoring the negatives, some of which
were badly water damaged and could not be saved. To quote, Jacqueline
Darakjy,
“James
C. Ogden’s work exhibits an excellent technical and artistic
knowledge of photography as well as a surprising immediacy that
draws the viewer into the lives of those in the photographs.
His photographs captured the soul of Tibet and the trauma happening
to its people. This is not a tourist’s view of Tibet but
record of the deep bond between this man and his chosen people,
of the love and acceptance that they shared for over twenty
years.”
This exhibit will appeal to those interested in Tibetan history,
and will delight photography enthusiasts. Regardless of one’s
basis of interest, the startling beauty of the human spirit
will reach out to all viewers.
A portion of the artist’s profit will go to The Tibetan
Childrens’ Fund. A talk with Jacqueline Darakjy on the
recovery and restoration of the exhibit, to be arranged.
The dA Center for the Arts is a non-profit organization that
has been the heart of the Pomona Arts Colony for 24 years, known
for community outreach and its fabulous gallery space.
