The
dA Center for the Arts presents the Barbie Doll Fund Raising
Event
To celebrate Barbie the bride, and to honor Susie
the bride during our "Simply Wed" show this month,
we gave Barbies that had been donated to the dA to artists to
be turned into brides.
The completed Barbies are on display now in the
gallery and will be raffled off on this coming Saturday, February
27th, with all proceeds benefiting new art programs at the dA.

To participate come by the dA during regular business
hours, or show up Saturday evening for the closing reception
of Simply Wed, and buy your raffle tickets. Then put them towards
the Barbies of your choice. At 8pm we will pick the winning
tickets, then celebrate with live music by Jerry O’Sullivan
and Friends. (You don’t need to be present to win.)
Raffle Tickets are $1 each, or: 7 for
$5.00, 15 for $10.00, 30 for $20.00
In 1959, Barbie was brought to America by the
Mattel Toy Company. Originally, Barbie was a German doll named
"Lilli," and was not a toy for little girls, rather
she was a sort of gag gift for adult men, for purposes verging
on pornographic. You could say Lilli was Barbie's evil twin
- the girl men want to date but not marry. Barbie, on the other
hand, has been the iconic bride-to-be for the past 50 years.
Over the decades, Barbie has worn more than 100 different wedding
gowns, some designed by the biggest names in the fashion industry
- Vera Wang, Carolina Herrera, Valentino...
